AYSO Core
Team play and skill development
The American Youth Soccer Organization is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States and a 501C3 nonprofit. Our mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs throughout the country which promote a fun, family environment built on the foundation of our Philosophies.

Our core program is the foundation for all the fun, excitement and learning that happens on the fields. AYSO is best known for our core program – it’s where the large majority of kids fall in love with soccer and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Designed for 3 year-olds, AYSO Playground is a child development program to help develop the child’s Fundamental Motor Skills using soccer as a common thread. The program allows participants to gradually discover the game for themselves by scaffolding activities in a fun AYSO environment. Meanwhile, parents or guardians are introduced to AYSO with a goal of developing them into volunteer coaches, referees and administrators.

This is NOT soccer games, this is Fundamental Motor Skill Development (FMSD) that will lead

into future soccer specific skill learning. This program was designed by child development and soccer experts to give your child a foundation for sports success. Your player will hop, skip, jump, run, throw, balance, kick… and play.

Each player needs a parent or adult helper…. But, don’t worry you’ll have fun!

In Schoolyard players learn soccer skills like kicking, dribbling, and passing, but in a low-pressure setting. Schoolyard is about exposing children to soccer without pressure.

Players will learn soccer themed Fundamental Motor Skills and finish with 3v3 scrimmages.

With the help of an AYSO trained leader, parents help take turns organizing the groups and supervising the program. During scrimmages parent volunteers keep time, but interfere with play as little as possible. There are only a few reasons to stop play in Schoolyard. If a child is not playing well with others, or if play must pause for injury, substitution, confusion, or to watch a flock of birds fly by, parents can quickly direct attention back to the game.

Schoolyard is different, young players need to get a feel for the ball and the field, so even though there are adults all around and many opportunities to offer instruction, the emphasis is on fun and play. Best of all, players find out that soccer is something they can do!
